Building Identification: Pylons and Monuments

A monument sign is normally considered to be a single or double sided, free-standing sign, relatively low to the ground, with a solid base (masonry, wood, aluminum) approximately the width of the sign. A pylon sign is similar but built on a single pole, poles or other structures that elevate the sign to a greater height than a typical monument sign. Either type of sign may be illuminated, internally or externally if power is available.
