Electrical Signs: Neon Signs

Signs made from bent neon filled glass tubes were one of the first types of illuminated signs in the US, introduced around 1920. Because of its high light intensity, bendability and relative cheapness, its popularity grew rapidly (Times Square, Las Vegas, etc.). Uncovered neon signs are still sold in large numbers, especially the generic ones “EXIT”, “OPEN”, “PIZZA”, etc. Neon tubing is still used to illuminate channel letters but LEDs, with their safer, much lower voltage requirement and remarkable longevity, are rapidly superseding neon.
